What's the difference between 14G, 16G and 18G septum rings?

Gauge is bar thickness, and the number runs backwards. 18G (1.0mm) is thinnest, 16G (1.2mm) is the septum standard, and 14G (1.6mm) is thickest. Most septum piercings are done at 16G, so 16G fits exactly, 18G fits with a little room, and 14G only fits if your piercing was done or stretched to it.

Should I get a 6mm, 8mm or 10mm septum ring?

How do I measure the septum ring I already have?

Two numbers. The gauge, which is bar thickness, and if you don't know it a septum piercing is almost always 16G. And the inside diameter, which you measure across the inside of the ring with a ruler, 6, 8 or 10mm. Every product page lists both, so match them and you're done.

Do small septum rings fall out more easily?

No. What holds a ring in is the closure, not the size. A clicker snaps shut, a segment ring closes seamlessly, and a horseshoe relies on its threaded balls, so check they're snug. A correctly sized small ring is as secure as a big one and far less likely to catch on a towel.
