The Tea: Addressing Your Cartilage Concerns
Hey Body Candy Fam!
Hello, hello! Welcome to The Tea - I'm Alley, and this is my weekly, every-Thursday e-zine where I talk about all things pierced & modified.
I've been getting a lot of questions about cartilage piercings! There are lots of little things you don't think about when you get a new piercing in your ear. What side am I going to sleep on? Can I wear earplugs or headphones?
I'm currently trying to heal up a few different cartilage piercings in my ear (helix, conch, and tragus), so I figure I'd weigh in on some of the stuff you might not be thinking about:
Today's topics:
- Can I wear headphones/airpods with a tragus piercing? My personal experience, yes, I was able to wear them while I was traveling.
- As far as earplugs go, they're a necessity as a musician... Depending on the individual plugs, they might be a bit tricky, but it's more about being aware when you are inserting them
- My hair gets caught in my helix constantly! I've been wearing a lot of up-dos just to keep it from getting snagged. It's important to always double-check before you go swinging your hair around!
- Shirts and sweaters are scary around helix piercings as well! I had my first snag the other day... ouch! I got in the shower and let the water run over it to give it a bit of soothing.
- My conch has (surprisingly) been the easiest to deal with! It's tucked so far into my ear (with a flat back stud) that nothing I've run into has given it any trouble yet.
P.S. A very special cameo from my birds in today's Tea!

Piercings are an incredibly personal experience. Not only are piercings performed on individuals of all different shapes, sizes, and ages, but they are performed by piercers with individual techniques. Needless to say, it becomes very difficult to list any one answer or technique as the go-to in terms of something that works for everyone... But there is one thing that is important to every piercing experience - good piercing aftercare. One of the best ways to keep your piercing clean is with a sea salt soak. This mixture is simple but effective - rather than think of it as a "topical" like a cream/lotion/ointment (which should NEVER be used on a healing piercing), think of these salt soaks as a way to flush out your piercing. Using the salt soak will irrigate any dirt, bacteria, or grime away from your fragile piercing, which also hydrating it and helping with swelling/pain. We wrote a whole blog about how to make and use sea salt soaks - read it now: Basic Piercing Care: How To Make A Sea Salt Soak.
