The Tea: How Long To Wait Before Changing Your Piercing Jewelry
Hey Body Candy Fam!
Hello everyone! It's me, Alley, here for another fun edition of The Tea. It's my weekly vlog where I talk about stuff that us pierced and modified people want to hear about - think piercing jewelry, piercing tips, and what it means to be pierced and proud. Thanks for joining me!
Today we're talking about why you shouldn't change your jewelry on your healing piercings! After getting pierced, even though your first layer of skin is going to heal over pretty quickly and look nice and healthy... Your piercing is lying to you! Your body can take up to a year to heal a lot of piercings (with more than a few exceptions), sometimes even more for some people.
Let's talk a little bit more in depth about your piercing journey and why it's so important to let your piercing heal before you swap anything out.
Today's topics:
- Remember that a piercing is technically a puncture wound. A needle is being pushed all the way through your anatomy. This is why it's so important to be pierced by a pro - they have special needles that glide through the skin, causing the minimal amount of trauma.
- Changing your jewelry too early can cause ripping, tearing, infections, or migrations. At the very least, it will prolong your healing time, which will inevitably make it so you can't change out your jewelry for even longer.
- If you are struggling with your jewelry (i.e. it's irritating your body; you're unhappy with the way it looks; you think you're having an allergic reaction), contact your piercer! They will be able to help you swap into something more comfy without causing much damage.
- When you are pierced, make sure your initial jewelry is higher-end. You'll want to stick with implant grade titanium, 14k gold, or something of the like. Please note that every body is different and not every material will work for every person, including the high-quality stuff!
- Listen to your piercer's advice when it comes to heal time. You may be able to change your tongue ring after a few months, whereas an upper ear cartilage piercing will be around a full year of healing. Your piercer will let you know which timeframe to stick to.

Speaking of healing piercings, have you ever had an itchy sensation in a fresh piercing? Symptoms like that can be quite alarming, but it's not always a bad thing when you feel an itch in a new mod. Itching can oftentimes be the sensation you feel when your piercing is healing itself. As your body heals around the jewelry, it has the tendency to push and pull on the jewelry itself, resulting in an itchiness that is annoying, but is ultimately good! When should you be concerned about itchiness? If you notice the signs of infection or rejection alongside it - think: a change in the look of your piercing; piercing holes getting wider; thinning or transparent skin; excess redness; a smell; greenish/yellowish discharge; pain; or any other symptoms that appear out of nowhere that seem out of place. Either way, it's always good to know what's going on with your body! Check out this week's blog for more helpful information: Why Is My Piercing Itchy? Why Does My Piercing Itch?
I've been feeling like a bit of a space cadet lately, so let's talk otherworldly body jewelry for this week's selections. Let's start with a fun one, Aliens & UFOs! Aliens are mysterious, cool, and a little bit nostalgic (especially for those of us that grew up in the 90s). We've got aliens galore in our collection, with an added bit of spaceships, planets, stars, and lots of other fun themes. Next, let's talk about our closest celestial body, the moon. There's something witchy and mysterious about the moon, but it's also comforting and grounding. We've got moon septum rings, moon belly rings, moon nipple rings... Enough moon-themed jewelry to get your fill of our in-the-sky nighttime companion. Finally, just because they sparkle like the stars, I'm giving a shout out to our opal love collection. Opals are arguably the best stone for body jewelry - this fantastic material shimmers and shines with fiery inflections that are as eye-catching as they are classy. We've even got opals in multiple colors - white, blue, pink, green, red, black, purple... You name it, we've probably got it. Check them all out via the links above.
I've been alternating weeks with my Answering Your Piercing Questions and informational Tea sessions, but that doesn't mean you should stop sending me your amazing questions/comments! Every week, I have a column on Saturdays called Dear Alley. I answer three of your questions/comments every week. Do you have a belly ring that's giving you issues? Are you concerned about getting a septum ring? Want me to weigh in on what getting one of my mods was like. I'm here for it! Send me an email at DearAlley@bodycandy.com. Be nice! Maybe I'll answer your question this week.
