The Tea: Jestrum Update, Pt. 2
Hey Body Candy Fam!
Hello, everybody! It's Alley and its Thursday, which means you made it to The Tea. It's my every-Thursday vlog where we talk about all-things Body Candy - think piercings; body mods; body jewelry; and what it's like to be pierced. Thank you so much for being here today!
It's not too often I get a new piercing, so for today's Tea, we're continuing the follow-up on what it's like to heal up with a jestrum piercing... And in case you missed last week's episode (or my initial Jestrum episode). There have been some interesting challenges associated with healing up this unique upper lip piercing.
I think this will be my last update on my jestrum, as I'm exiting the swelling/soreness phase and moving more into the less exciting, long-term healing process... But I'm excited to share my thoughts with you on what the last few weeks have held for me. Here's what's up:
Today's topics:
- I switched from thinking I was getting a medusa to getting my jestrum literally 10 minutes before my appointment. I do not regret it! There's no bar inside my mouth, and that makes me happy because I know I'm protecting my teeth.
- Post being pierced, I just had one hour of stiff-upper-lip, almost like it was scared! But then it loosened right up. My lip was swollen for about a week and a half, but my swelling finally went down about three (3) to four (4) days ago.
- Now my jewelry is a little bit long, but it really hasn't been annoying. I haven't gotten it caught on anything (knock on wood). It's been a challenge to learn soda cans and spoons. I was definitely eating out of the side of my mouth for a few days.
- I've only had one day of redness, and it was a 95-degree day where I went hiking and got all sweaty. I've been doing my best to clean it with saline once per day (there's been a few days where I clean it twice), and that's been great for my jestrum's health.
All in all, besides the initial pain of getting my jestrum, I'd give this one a 10/10.

I've been traveling a lot lately, so I've been going through airport security checkpoints. Although I know the answer, I can't help but think to myself every time, "Should I have taken out my piercings?" It can be pretty nerve-wracking to walk through a metal detector/xray at the airport, especially because your piercings are going to show up opaque. Everyone will know what piercings I have! But even more intimidating is the worry that you might be pulled out of line due to your choice of jewelry. Are my piercings going to set the metal detector off? The answer is probably not as scary as you think - it's important to understand how metal detectors work and why they exist in the first place. If metal detectors were set to alarm anytime someone had a piercing, nobody would ever get through security checkpoints! It's the same with the buttons on your clothes - they just aren't big enough to warrant high-alert. Of course, those of us with higher-gauge ear jewelry or bigger piercings might have to compromise a bit. Learn all about whether or not your piercings will set off airport security in this week's blog: Will My Piercings Set Off A Metal Detector?
Ok - time to talk jewelry! First, I'm highlighting bioplast jewelry this week. Bioplast is a very interesting material - it was initially developed for use in the medical field. This means it can 1.) be sterilized in an autoclave and 2.) is extremely biocompatible... Which makes it the perfect material for piercing jewelry. Bioplast retainers don't have to be boring either - they come in several colors, are super flexible, and super comfy in your piercings, check them out now. Next, let's talk about my old standby - opals! You know them, you love them, opals shimmer and sparkle like no other stone. They're amazingly beautiful and make an excellent addition to any piercing curation. Check out our entire opal love collection above. Finally, I'm highlighting one of our newest collections because it's been such a big hit! Our Shiny, Sparkly, & Chic collection takes the best of all worlds and combines it into one convenient collection. Sometimes you just need something simple and effective - for this collection of body jewelry, think simple beauty, stunning simplicity, and sparkly accents that fit amazingly into any outfit or lifestyle. Check it out above!
