The Tea: Jestrum Update
Hey Body Candy Fam!
Hello, everybody! It's Thursday, which means you made it to The Tea. It's Alley - I'm here every week with Body Candy talking about whatever's on my mind... Which usually means something piercing/tattoo/body mod related. Thanks so much for joining me today.
For today's Tea, we're talking about the follow-up of my piercing... And in case you missed last week's Tea, I ended up changing my mind and getting a jestrum piercing instead of a medusa. I LOVE it, I'm so happy with it and the way it looks.
I wanted to just briefly discuss my post-piercing experiences so far since it's been so long since I've been pierced. If anyone has any questions about jestrum piercings that I don't answer in today's Tea, feel free to reach out to me at DearAlley@bodycandy.com.
Today's topics:
- Part of my decision making process included that the jestrum jewelry doesn't enter your mouth at all. Since I have done so much work with my teeth (Invisalign), I really wanted to protect my mouth as much as possible.
- My one complaint - I picked out a whole bunch of fancy jewelry options... But I just can't wear them until I'm done healing. I ended up going with a simple rose gold ball and a flat disc, just to make sure my healing was as stress-free as possible.
- Pain scale: definitely the most painful piercing I've ever gotten. After measuring me up, they entered through my lip with a straight needle. When it was ready to come out, I felt it pop through the skin in my cupid's bow. Ouch!
- I do think my immune system was down, but I have been traveling and my sleep schedule is a little off... But it's important to remember that piercings are open wounds and that can definitely contribute to getting sick a bit easier.

I've been traveling a lot lately, so I've been going through airport security checkpoints. Although I know the answer, I can't help but think to myself every time, "Should I have taken out my piercings?" It can be pretty nerve-wracking to walk through a metal detector/xray at the airport, especially because your piercings are going to show up opaque. Everyone will know what piercings I have! But even more intimidating is the worry that you might be pulled out of line due to your choice of jewelry. Are my piercings going to set the metal detector off? The answer is probably not as scary as you think - it's important to understand how metal detectors work and why they exist in the first place. If metal detectors were set to alarm anytime someone had a piercing, nobody would ever get through security checkpoints! It's the same with the buttons on your clothes - they just aren't big enough to warrant high-alert. Of course, those of us with higher-gauge ear jewelry or bigger piercings might have to compromise a bit. Learn all about whether or not your piercings will set off airport security in this week's blog: Will My Piercings Set Off A Metal Detector?
Ok - time to talk jewelry! First, I'm highlighting bioplast jewelry this week. Bioplast is a very interesting material - it was initially developed for use in the medical field. This means it can 1.) be sterilized in an autoclave and 2.) is extremely biocompatible... Which makes it the perfect material for piercing jewelry. Bioplast retainers don't have to be boring either - they come in several colors, are super flexible, and super comfy in your piercings, check them out now. Next, let's talk about my old standby - opals! You know them, you love them, opals shimmer and sparkle like no other stone. They're amazingly beautiful and make an excellent addition to any piercing curation. Check out our entire opal love collection above. Finally, I'm highlighting one of our newest collections because it's been such a big hit! Our Shiny, Sparkly, & Chic collection takes the best of all worlds and combines it into one convenient collection. Sometimes you just need something simple and effective - for this collection of body jewelry, think simple beauty, stunning simplicity, and sparkly accents that fit amazingly into any outfit or lifestyle. Check it out above!
