Encyclopedia of Body Piercings: Standard Nostril Nose Piercing

Location: through the thinnest part of the nose, above the curve of the nostril

Jewelry: initially, a nose ring will be used ranging from 20 gauge (0.8mm) to 18 gauge (1mm) in thickness with length varying depending on the individual; other jewelry types used can include nose bones, nose screws, l-shaped, nose hoops, or captive rings

Healing: total healing time can be anywhere from 3 to 4 months

Aftercare: submerge and soak your nose into a cup of warm water and sea salt solution for cleaning; cotton swabs can help remove stubborn crusties; should be cleaned about twice a day

One of the most common of all piercings (after the lobes of the ear, of course), the nostril piercing, which is usually referred to as simply "nose piercing", has been sought after by curious modified bodies for a long time and doesn't seem to be slowing down in popularity anytime soon.

Have you been thinking about getting your nose pierced but not sure what the actual process is like?

Check out the video above from our YouTube channel that shows Stefanie getting their nose piercing performed by professional piercer James, from American Skin Art in our hometown of Buffalo, NY.

Here are a few good tips to take into consideration before going to get your nose pierced:

- before going to the studio, blow your nose to clear it out

- breath in through your mouth when your piercer preps your nose; the cleaning agents may have a strong smell

- after the piercing, grab a tissue if your piercer doesn't offer you one because shedding a tear, sneezing, and some slight bleeding may occur

- if you might be sick with a sinus infection or other respiratory illness, you need to postpone your appointment until you are better (but if you just have issues relating to sinus allergies, you will probably be fine)

After the piercing, be careful when you're blowing your nose! Be gentle while your nose piercing is healing because when you're rough, it can cause complications with the process and prolong the time for it to heal fully. Once your nose is healed, you can blow your nose as much as you want. Just make sure you clean the boogers off your jewelry afterward.
