Some of you are probably saying, “what’s a lippy loop?”  Their name may sound a bit funny, but lippy loops are actually pretty awesome little pieces of jewelry.  They’re lip rings with an opening, much like a horseshoe ring, but their unique style and shape makes them extremely lower lip friendly.

Instead of having a horseshoe or “C” shape, the lippy loop has a graduated curve a little more like a lower case “U,” with one side being flat like a standard labret stud.  They come in a few different styles, with acrylic or titanium balls, gem balls, or spikes at either end.  The majority of these items are found in two loop sizes, 3/8″ (10 millimeters), or 7/16″ (11millimeters), and most of them will be a standard 14 or 16 gauge.

If you think of the curve as being three sides like a U (left, right, and “bottom”), you can picture the item in a labret piercing.  The “bottom” or back rests unseen inside the mouth, while the flatter side goes through the actual piercing, and the final side curves over the top of the lip, so both balls or decorations are showing.

For some, lippy loops will be preferable to a regular horseshoe or BCR because their unique shape allows for a more comfortable fit.  This makes them a great alternative to standard circular jewelry, both for classic labret piercings, and sets of lower lip piercings or “bites.”  They’re also a great way to cultivate a signature look because of the many available ball combinations.

After all, the lips do say a lot about your personal style.  Why not give them a little extra help?

    Hi Lenny,

It depends on the jewelry! If the piece of jewelry is internally threaded, it should be specified in the “specifications tab”

I’m interested in getting one of these for my new labret piercing to switch out in a few months. Are these internally threaded? I stopped using jewlry with the threads on the outside a while back as they caused so much discomfort when putting them in. Plus all of my tops have the threading on them

    Hi Becca,

Depending on your personal anatomy and the size of the jewelry, yes, a lippy loop can be worn in a medusa piercing

Hi! I was wondering if a lippy loop would work in a Medusa piercing?

    Hi Gabriela,

Lippy loops may work in your lip piercing – it just depends on the gauge of the jewelry and your personal lip anatomy. As long as the gauge matches up, you can try one out in your lip and see if it works for you aesthetically.
