The Tea: Surface Piercings vs. Dermal Anchors
Hey Body Candy Fam!
It me, Alley, Back for another edition of The Tea. If it's your first time joining us, welcome! The Tea is my every-Thursday vlog where I have a chance to talk about anything that's on my mind - usually related to piercings, tattoos, body mods, and just being yourself.
Have you ever seen a piercing that just seems to "float" somewhere on someone's body? You're most likely looking at a dermal piercing. The fun thing about these little mods is they can be placed anywhere (within reason). You may occasionally also hear about surface piercings - they're very similar in appearance, but there are a few significant ways that these two unique mods differ.
Let's talk about dermals and surface piercings today bbs! Here are some quick facts:
Today's questions:
- The main difference between these two piercings? A dermal is a single-point piercing (it stays anchored beneath the skin) and surface piercings have an exit-point
- Dermal anchors are located underneath the dermal layer of skin - hence their name. Anchors often come with holes in the jewelry so your tissue can grow through them as it heals, further anchoring them in place.
- Did you know that both eyebrow rings and navel piercings are technically considered surface piercings? They are very common locations for piercings, so they've earned their own categories.
- Certain piercings might be better for certain parts of the body. For example, a dermal might be better for a part of the body that moves a lot (think arm, wrist, fingers), whereas a surface piercing might better suit a curved body part. Your piercer can help you figure out what would be the better option per location.
- Keep in mind that dermals and surface piercings are prone to migration and rejection (mostly due to their tendency to get snagged). Make sure you're ready to accept the risks before you head out to get one of these mods!

We like to double down on good information for our Body Candy Babes! Maybe we should have called this Dermal/Surface week. Either way, we dove quite a bit deeper into this interesting topic in our weekly blog. We discuss jewelry options, anchor tops, risks/rewards, and how to talk to your piercer about wanting a dermal or surface piercing. Check out this week's blog for more information: What's The Difference Between A Dermal Piercing And A Surface Piercing?
Now it's time to talk about jewelry. I've been trying to feature new collections here from week to week to make sure I'm keeping things interesting, so let's start with a fun one. POP of color is a new collection we've put together of some of our best selling, colorful pieces. Think beautiful matte jewelry, fun glow in the dark options, and eye-catching rainbow anodized jewelry. Speaking of rainbows, we also have an entire collection dedicated to rainbow body jewelry! If you're looking for a literal rainbow, or just some rainbow anodized options like I mentioned before - this is the place to be, especially for Pride month! Last, I wanted to take a total 180 and pick something dark and mysterious. We've got the Dark of Night collection, which has lots of Halloween-themed jewelry, black and grey body jewelry, coffin and blood-filled plugs, and generally witchy stuff for our gothier customers. Each of these collections are specifically curated with our best-selling stuff in mind, so you know it's Body Candy babe approved!
Do you like these informational blogs? I look forward to them every week. One of the best ways you can let me know what you want to hear about is through a direct email. Send your questions/comments/compliments/concerns to DearAlley@bodycandy.com. I'll occasionally answer your piercing questions for an episode of The Tea, or, I might select your email to answer during my Saturday Dear Alley content.
