The Tea: Do Piercings Hurt More Than Tattoos?
Hey Body Candy Fam!
Happy May y'all! It's your girl, Alley, here for another exciting edition of The Tea. It's my every-Thursday vlog where I talk about piercings; body mods; and what it's like living a pierced and modified lifestyle. Thanks for joining us today!
Obviously we're a body jewelry site... But something about tattoos and piercings seems to go hand-in-hand. Today we're answering a common question - "Do Piercings Hurt More Than Tattoos?"
When it comes to answering "tattoo pain vs. piercing pain," there are lots of things to keep in mind. Here's a quick rundown - but make sure you watch my vlog for the full scoop!
Today's Topics:
- Piercings: piercings are more of a quick, sharp pain - it's a one-time puncture through a part of your body and the pain is usually over within a minute or so. In general, piercings have a much longer heal time compared to tattoos - some piercings, like cartilage or nipple piercings, can take up to a year to heal fully.
- Tattoos: tattoos in the moment are a bit more of a commitment to pain. Whereas a piercing needle goes through your body, tattoos are repeated, shallow stabs with needles that are dipped in ink using a tattoo machine. Unlike piercings, tattoos are usually healed within a week or two.
- Tattoo pain vs. Piercing Pain: In general, piercings hurt less in the moment, but have a longer commitment to heal time. Tattoos hurt more in the moment (due to the time commitment), but have a shorter commitment to heal time.
- Pro Tip: pain levels also vary depending on the part of your body you're getting modded - a tattoo on the ribs is going to hurt more than a tattoo on your outer arm. Same goes for piercings - a nipple piercing tends to sting more than a septum piercing.
- Pro Tip Two (2): Everyone's body is different! This is the most important thing to remember when it comes to answering questions about pain... We can form a general consensus about what hurts more, but ultimately, your body is going to decide in the moment.

Have you ever wondered what it was like to kiss someone with a lip piercing? Doesn't the jewelry get in the way? Maybe... But actually, we think you'll find it's not too different from kissing someone with a regular set of lips. The key here is communication - you'll find that some partners want you to play with the jewelry or focus on it... Others won't want you to touch it at all. Another thing to keep in mind - heal time. A fully healed lip ring is fully kissable. But if you have a fresh lip piercing, you'll want to avoid kissing until it's fully healed (think one (1) to three (3) months). Kissing can introduce bacteria; debris; beauty products; or bodily fluids into your piercing, which is a no-no for healing up with no issues. We cover all the bases of first base with a lip piercing (see what we did there?). Check out our latest blog: Can You Kiss With A Lip Piercing? How To Kiss With A Lip Ring.
