99 Problems... and my piercing is one!?
Piercing problems and how you can remedy them
Wrong cleaning
New piercings should ALWAYS be cleaned with wound wash (sterile saline solution) This usually comes in a spray can and can be found at most pharmacies
Oral piercings can be cleaned with warm salt water or alcohol-free mouthwash
You should not be cleaning with harsh soaps, rubbing alcohol, etc.
Wrong treatment
People use a lot of crazy things when trying to heal their new piercing. Do not apply tea tree oil, crushed aspirin, tea bags or antibacterial ointment
Use the LITHA method - Leave It The Heck Alone and continue to gently clean with wound wash. See your piercer or a medical professional if necessary.
Wrong Jewelry
You should know, when you go to get pierced that you’re getting the proper style of jewelry. Healing is dependent on this factor
A large majority of piercings require a straight barbell - i.e. conch, helix, nostril, etc
Some require a curved barbell - i.e. daith, belly ring, eyebrow ring, rook
Circular jewelry moves around too much in many piercings and could hinder the healing process. Once healed though, you may change jewelry styles.
Wrong angle
Do you have a pressure bump? Is an irritation bump forming only on one side of the barbell? This may be a sign that it was pierced at the wrong angle. A piercer would have to evaluate the situation. In many cases, the piercing may need to be taken out and repierced after it heals.
Wrong material
Standard piercing jewelry is made of ASTM F-136 Titanium. If you’re experiencing trouble with your new piercing and your jewelry is of a different material there is a chance that the jewelry material could be to blame.
