Q: Is it safe to sleep on my ear piercing while it's healing? I’ve been trying to sleep on the other side, but I keep rolling over on it? -Mia F
A: It’s not a good idea to sleep on a healing piercing. You can injure it in your sleep just by naturally moving around and that can cause irritation bumps or worse. The best way to avoid sleeping directly on an ear piercing is to get one of those neck pillows used for travel. They’re shaped a lot like a donut with a hole in the center. You would put your ear in the hole so that your weight is distributed around it and not directly on it. Hope that helps, best of luck!
Q: I have always had pretty sensitive skin. Do you sell hypoallergenic jewelry for sensitive piercings? -Em
A: Hypoallergenic is really more of a sales term than a medical term. It’s like when a product is marked “all natural” but no government oversight regulates them to make sure it really is “all natural”. (As opposed to something like “Kosher” or “lactose-free” where there is an agency watching over the company to make sure they fit the requirements.) That said, if you’re really sensitive to metals and are concerned about a reaction, ASTM F-136 titanium should be what you’re looking for. You can also consider, depending on the piercing, jewelry that is made from non-metal materials like glass, stone, or wood. Also keep in mind that if you dislike the silver-tone of titanium, quality titanium can be anodized to any color other than black. If you really have your heart set on black jewelry, niobium and rhodium are generally considered safe for sensitive skin and can be found in true black. Happy shopping!
