Your lips are full of tiny blood vessels, nerves, and salivary glands meaning placement is everything. If your anatomy can’t support a piercing, it can reject, migrate, or even affect your teeth and gums. Always get checked by an experienced piercer first.
👉 Horizontal Lip Piercings
Includes labret, lowbret, Madonna, Monroe, Ashley, and all the “bites.” These piercings go front to back through your lip or cheek. The Ashley is unique, it goes straight through the lip itself. Make sure to downsize your jewelry once healed to avoid dental damage.
👉 Vertical Labret
Perfect if you’re worried about teeth or gum issues. It goes vertically through the lower lip (not into the mouth) and uses a curved barbell. Variations like Vertical Snakebites sit on either side of the lip for a bold, balanced look.
👉 Angel Fangs & Angel Bites
Angel Fangs are upper-lip versions of Vertical Snakebites, curved barbells that give a cute “fang” look. Angel Bites sit in the same spots but go horizontally instead, so only one jewelry end shows.
👉 Medusa (Philtrum Piercing)
Sits right in the groove above your upper lip. Can be done horizontally (classic Medusa) or vertically (great for thinner lips). The piercer must avoid the frenulum and gum line to prevent dental issues.
👉 Dahlia Piercings
Placed at the corners of the mouth, named after the “Black Dahlia.” These are tricky, lots of movement, nerves, and vessels. Healing takes patience, and bite alignment is key to avoid chomping your jewelry.
