Q: How do you sleep with jewelry in your stretched ears. I feel like mine keep getting in the way now that I’ve sized up. -Anonymous
A: You have two options here for a comfortable night’s sleep. You can try switching your day jewelry out for silicone jewelry at night. However, if you’re at your goal size and aren’t in the process of stretching your lobes, you might want to simply take your jewelry out. A good massage with a body-compatible oil like jojoba will keep your lobes supple and healthy. Then all you have to do in the morning is lightly lube your lobes and your jewelry should slide right back in. The first few times you do this, you may want to reinsert your jewelry during a shower when the tissue is more relaxed and it’s easier to clean off the oil after. Just be careful not to drop your jewelry. Best of luck!
Q: My new jewelry is kind of itchy. How can I tell if it’s a metal allergy? -Madison S.
A: There are a few reasons why your piercing might itch. A fresh piercing is likely to itch while healing, which is totally normal and part of the healing process. If your piercing is past the healing stage and you recently changed your jewelry, that could be a possible allergic reaction. A few questions to consider – Have you had issues with nickel allergies in the past? Is your jewelry titanium or stainless steel? Did you purchase it from a reputable seller? Are there any other visible issues with your piercing besides the itch? Metal allergies tend to present with redness, possible crustiness/dryness, and can look like the skin is trying to pull away from the jewelry. Since nickel allergies (the most allergy) can appear at any time, one would guess that if you are wearing stainless steel, if you bought it from a less reputable source, and the piercing was healthy and healed before you put that jewelry in it, you might be dealing with a nickel allergy. The best suggestion would be to remove that particular piece of jewelry and replace it with the jewelry it was pierced with to see if the symptoms subside. If they do, the problem is the jewelry. If they don’t, a trip to the piercer is in order to get a better idea of what is going on. Good luck to you!
