Q: I took my septum jewelry out and now I can’t get it back in. Do septum piercings close up quickly? Should I try to force it through? Thank you. -Tanya P.
A: How fast a piercing closes can vary wildly, depending on the age and location of the piercing as well as the individual body of the person. Do not attempt to force the jewelry through, as this can potentially cause damage to the tissue and will also hurt like the dickens. What you can do is get to your piercer as quickly as possible. They can use an item known as an insertion taper to widen the opening of the fistula and slide the jewelry in. It works like a hollow piercing needle but has a blunt end to prevent further damage to the tissue. If your piercing is older and well established, you may want to try using a piercing safe lubricant (such as emu or jojoba oil) to help the jewelry slide through. Best of luck!
Q: My piercer just set me up with a new nose bone. I really don't like it though. It seems like it slides around a lot. What style stays put the best? -Qynn
A: The most stable nostril jewelry (and the gold standard for piercing with) is a flatback labret stud. The disc end keeps the jewelry from falling out and also prevents the end from poking your septum. There’s even a wide range of styles and ends available so you have options for what kind of look you want to go with. Best of all, these are available in a range of lengths so you can get the most comfortable fit possible. And once they are in, they are highly unlikely to fall out or shift around. Another alternative that's sure to stay put is a seamless nose hoop. Always fashionable and quite comfortable, these also come in a wide range of sizes. Hope that helps. Happy piercing!
