Q: What's the difference between an orbital and a conch piercing? I think what I want is a conch piercing but I'm not entirely sure. It's the one that loops around the outside of your ear.  - Megan

A: What you’re looking for is a conch piercing. An orbital piercing is two piercings (frequently at the highest point of the helix) that are connected by wearing a single piece of circular jewelry. A conch piercing is a single hole, deeper within the folds of the ear cartilage. It is the one you commonly see with people wearing circular jewelry that goes around the outside of the ear.  Q: Needles REALLY scare me. People have told me it's not a good idea but is it ok to get pierced with a gun? I feel like that would be easier. - Jilly

A: In answer to your question, NO!!!!!! It is never ok to get pierced with a gun. Piercing guns are not sanitary, they use blunt force trauma to get the jewelry through your flesh (which can lead to serious damage, including shattered cartilage), and the people wielding those piercing guns do not have anywhere close to the level of training that an APP piercer would have. Getting pierced with a gun is an excellent recipe for problems, messed-up piercings, bad advice, and hating your results. Needles can be scary for a lot of people, especially when they are around the face or head. It is always ok to close your eyes while the piercer is working. They won’t judge you and neither will anyone else. The needles used for piercing are beveled and so incredibly sharp that they go through in an instant. Just have a quick chat with your piercer beforehand so that they know about your fears. A quality piercer will do whatever they can to make your piercing a pleasant and totally unscary experience.
