Q: I have had my belly button pierced and it’s been pierced for years, since I was like 16 and I’m 28 now, but it’s like it’s moved or stretched. It’s not back up far enough like it used to be. A: Sadly, you may be experiencing rejection. If a lot more of the barbell is visible now, this is probably the reason. Rejection is what happens when a piercing starts to work its way through the skin and out of the body. You will continue to see less and less skin over time, and then the jewelry will either fall out or get ripped out. It’s always sad if you have to retire a piercing but leaving in a rejecting piercing can lead to much worse scarring. Of course, we at Body Candy are not professional piercers and you should probably consult one to be sure. Surface piercings, which include belly piercings, have a higher rate of rejection and it can be difficult to figure out exactly what causes it. Best of luck.

A: We would never recommend that someone attempt to perform their own piercing. Professional piercers serve long apprenticeships to learn not just how to pierce, but how to do so safely and hygienically. They have the proper tools to make sure your piercing is straight and located where it’s supposed to be. While you may be all ready to have your new piercing, it can be complete reflex to wince or jerk and that can lead to a piercing disaster. Plus, the lack of an autoclave could lead to sanitation issues that could cause an infection. You are always better off going to your local professional piercer – that’s why they’re the professionals!
