Q: What is a piercing that you wouldn't recommend getting? -Danisha G.
A: That is a great question that I wish more people would ask. The number one piercing that people should NOT be getting are the “snake eyes” or “frog eyes” piercings. These are tongue piercings that go horizontally through the tongue with the ball ends either on the sides of the tongue (snake eyes) or on the top of the tongue using a curved barbell (frog eyes). These piercings are dangerous. Your tongue is made up of a pair of muscles and the jewelry keeps those muscles from functioning independently. This can lead to issues with speech, not to mention the dental damage from the ball ends. If you come across a piercer who is still doing these piercings, you should never allow them to pierce you as they clearly do not care about client safety. Be safe out there, and happy piercing!
Q: So saline solution is pretty gentle right? Is that the only aftercare option? I have really sensitive skin, so I'm always worried about what I use on it. Are there aftercare options specifically for sensitive skin?
-Keil R.
A: Sterile saline is as gentle as it gets. It’s just sterilized saline solution in a pressurized can. You give your piercing a good spray to loosen any crusties, let it sit for a moment, and then rinse your piercing in the shower. (The rinse prevents any salty residue from the saline from drying onto your piercing.) Then dry your piercing with a clean paper towel or by using a hair dryer set to the lowest setting. Not only is this the current industry standard for aftercare, it’s super gentle and allows the body to heal without interfering with the process. You don’t want to use anything harsh that may interrupt the healing or, worse, neglect cleaning your piercings entirely. (And you NEVER want to put tea tree oil, crushed aspirin, antibacterial sprays/ointments/soap or any harsh chemicals on your piercings!) You can always discuss your concerns with your piercer but sterile saline (no added ingredients!) should be as kind to your skin as you could possibly want. Happy piercing!
