Q: I recently read a reddit article about a girl who had a white string coming from her nipple piercing. She eventually cut it, not knowing what it was. She said she almost passed out from the pain & later doctor confirmed it was a tendon. Is this a myth?! Kinda makes me scared of getting one.... - Kaitlyn
A: Isn’t that a fantastic story? So compelling and scary, it could almost be a horror movie! In fact, it probably ought to be because that story has been around for more than a minute now. This story has also appeared as a nerve as well as a tendon. And while there are a few tiny tendons found in the nipple, the odds of this being true are so small as to be infinitesimal. A white tube coming out of a piercing is usually either the fistula or scar tissue, either of which might be painful to cut but not to the point of “nearly passing out”. That being said... if anything unusual does happen with your piercing you should always seek the help and guidance of your trusted piercer or a medical professional. Hope that helps & happy piercing!
Q: I developed the dreaded "nose bump" about a month after I got my nose pierced and it just won't go away. I've had my piercing for almost 3 months...what should I do? I've tried surface cleaning with sterile saline, dabbing it with tea tree oil, and the L.I.T.H.A method. Please help! - Jazlyn
A: First of all, please stop doing most of the things you are doing. You should only be cleaning your piercing by using sterile saline spray, Dabbing at or touching your piercing with anything to clean it can potentially introduce bacteria. Also, tea tree oil is too strong to be used undiluted on healthy skin, let alone a healing piercing. In the end, your attempts to make the situation better are potentially making it worse. Please go see a trusted piercer and find out the root cause of the bump. There could be many reasons for your irritation bump including the angle of the original piercing, the style of your jewelry, the material of the jewelry, or something else entirely.
