Q: I've been on the fence about getting my belly button pierced. I'm a plus size girl and the way my belly sits is a little funny, but I want to be able to love my body and feel good about myself, however, I don't know if it'll even look good or if people will judge me for it because I'm plus size. Do you have any advice? - Kitty
A: First, we should address the part where you say your belly sits a little funny. That sounds like you may not be anatomically suited for a standard belly piercing. However, it is still possible that you may be okay to get a floating navel piercing. (Almost the same but the bottom end is a flat disc that sits inside the navel.) So that is something you would need to have evaluated by a trustworthy piercer. Secondly, as for what people will say…. Who cares what people say? It’s your body and you are entitled to do to whatever makes you feel beautiful. Whether it’s how you dress, how you do your hair, or getting pierced, it’s nobody’s business but yours. If you want the piercing and have the anatomy to heal it properly, get the piercing. If anyone dares to criticize you for having it, they are rude and judgmental and you should tell them so, along with a few other choice words. You do you, Kitty. And if someone doesn’t like it, you tell them where to go. Happy piercing.
Q: I'm looking to get my conch done but I've heard it's really, really painful... Is that really one of the most painful piercings? I want to commit but I am scared of the sensation. Thanks! -Winnie
A: Pain is an entirely subjective experience that varies wildly from person to person. It’s pretty much impossible to tell you how painful a conch piercing might be. That said, piercings are brief experiences. The needle goes through the flesh quickly and then it’s over so even if it is painful (and, to some degree, it will be because it’s a needle but that is true of all piercings) the pain is only momentary. A conch piercing may be painful (if only briefly) for some, but many people say that the experience was practically painless. So, in the end, it may or may not be painful for you but even if it is, the pain is over extremely quickly. Best of luck!
