Q: I got my lip pierced 6 months ago. I had to take it out because I was getting surgery. I only had it out for 5 hours and when I went to put it back in, it wouldn't go in. I noticed that there is a hard lump inside my lip where the hole is. What do you think the lump might be? And can I get it re-pierced? -Lisa G.
A: First off, wishing you all the best in your recovery from your surgery. As for your lip piercing, the hard lump you are feeling is most likely scar tissue. That lump most likely used to be the fistula for your piercing. (We here at Body Candy are not doctors though, and nor do we even play them on TV.) So, if one assumes with a reasonable degree of certainty that your lump is scar tissue, you should be able to get your lip re-pierced. HOWEVER, you may not be able to get it re-pierced in the exact same spot. That would be your trusted piercer’s call to make. Also, if you do get it re-pierced in the same spot, the needle will meet with more resistance from scar tissue than standard tissue like you had during the original piercing. In other words, it will probably hurt a bit more. Your best bet is to consult with your piercer and see if that spot can be re-pierced and whether you feel comfortable dealing with the additional discomfort. Best of luck!
Q: I’ve had my eyebrow piercing for 2 months and it’s not really producing any crusties. Is it okay? -Molly B
A: This is what you would call a “good problem” because it’s the kind of problem you actually want to have. There is nothing wrong with a healing piercing (eyebrow or other) that is not crusty or oozing. As long as it’s not red, hot, swollen, you’re not running a fever, or having any other signs of irritation or infection, you are absolutely A-okay. In fact, people reading this are probably wishing they had your situation. Just keep cleaning twice a day with sterile saline spray and drying it after with a hair dryer or clean paper towel. Some people just have bodies that heal a little nicer than others and it would seem that you may be one of the lucky ones! Happy piercing!
