Q: My girlfriend is telling me that I shouldn't get a tongue piercing because it might tear my tongue. I've never heard of that happening. Is that a real thing? -Meg
A: This is a new one! It’s hypothetically possible that you could tear your tongue if you had some particularly gruesome mishap involving your piercing. You could just as easily tear your earlobe if your earring snagged on something. Actually, it would probably be easier to tear your earlobe because it’s skin and flesh. Your tongue is a muscle. It’s really tough tissue because it’s the strongest muscle in the human body. (Think about how much we talk or eat – that’s quite a workout!) So, while it’s not entirely impossible that you could tear your tongue, it’s incredibly unlikely and would only happen if something major happened. If you’re looking to get your tongue pierced and this is what’s stopping you, go ahead and get it done. The odds are definitely in your favor! Happy piercing!
Q: I really love my nipple piercings but there are times where I don't want them to be super obvious. Are there jewelry types that are a little less obvious? Thank you. -Tanya
A: Unfortunately, while there are multiple types of jewelry you can wear in nipple piercings, they’re all roughly the same level of obvious when seen through clothing. Even something smooth like a hinged segment ring is still going to show the shape of the jewelry. You could try straight barbells with flat disc ends. Your piercer should be able to either hook you up with a pair or order them for you. If you really want the jewelry entirely hidden though, your best bet might be a pair of silicone nipple covers. They work like pasties, sticking to the skin to cover the entire nipple and giving a smooth effect without having to wear something like a bra or binder. Best of luck!
