Q: I'm thinking about getting pierced (this will be my first one) but I have a nickel allergy. Are there many cute jewelry options out there for people with metal allergies though? -Makayla
A: There are tons of options out there for people with nickel allergies! ASTM F-136 implant grade titanium is currently considered the “gold standard” of piercing jewelry. It’s common so it’s easy to find, and if you get threadless style jewelry, you can simply change the ends of the jewelry for a completely different look. And if you’re not a fan of the silver-tone that titanium is usually found in, it can be anodized to virtually any color you might like except black. Titanium can only be anodized to a gunmetal grey which, while beautiful, is not an actual black. If you are determined to have black jewelry, you may wish to check out niobium or rhodium. These are less common and may cost more but should be just as safe for your nickel allergy. And of course, depending on the piercing you want, you may be able to find jewelry in wood, stone, or glass. Best of luck!!
Q: Ok this might be a silly question, but I've never had more than one piercing at a time. I want to get my nipples pierced; is there any reason I shouldn't get them done at the same time? They do them both in one sitting right? -Bella
A: Yes, you can get both your nipples pierced in one session. That is actually the more common way to go about it, especially considering the somewhat lengthy healing time that comes with nipple piercings. Some people do report that the second one is slightly more uncomfortable than the first due to the pain receptors being already active but not to an extent that would be intolerable. In fact, the general rule of thumb is that you get no more than three piercings in a single session. So, if you were feeling particularly frisky you could even get another piercing in that session and still be ok. The body just needs to be able to heal everything without overtaxing itself. So, remember this handy rhyme – three, maybe four, never more. (Four would require a discussion with your piercer beforehand and depend on the location and type of piercings involved.) Happy piercing!
