Monroes, Madonnas, and Labrets

One of the most iconic lip piercings is the monroe. It is named due to its similarity to the famed beauty mark on Marilyn Monroe’s upper lip. A monroe consists of one puncture above the lip on the left side of the face. Monroe piercings are typically adorned with a labret stud with a flat back - this is the most popular lip jewelry of choice for most lip piercings. The opposite placement of this would be considered a madonna piercing, named after Madonna's iconic beauty mark, which happens to be on the right side of the upper lip instead.

A piercing centered below the bottom lip is known as a labret piercing. This consists of a single puncture, typically fitted with a labret stud. A captive bead ring or seamless ring can also be used for a more noticeable look.

A variation of the labret piercing is known as a vertical labret. Vertical labrets consist of two punctures - the needle enters near the top of the lower lip and exits where a standard labret would be placed. The piercing itself never touches the inside of the mouth, meaning curved barbells are exclusively used for this piercing.

Medusas, Philtrums, and Jestrums

Much like the labret, a medusa or philtrum piercing is located in the center of the mouth above the top lip. This piercing is placed in the "cupid's bow" of your upper lip, anatomically known as the philtrum. This piercing consists of a single puncture and is almost exclusively outfitted with labret studs.

The jestrum or vertical medusa is a variation of the medusa, much like the vertical labret. It consists of two punctures, one that enters into the top lip, and one that exits above the lip where the medusa would be placed. A curved barbell is the only oral jewelry that can be used for this lip piercing.

Dahlias, Bites, and Multiple Lip Piercings

The Dahlia, named after the Black Dahlia is a unique lip piercing. It is also referred to as the Joker because it consists of two piercings on both corners of the mouth. This placement is chosen to mimic the look of the extended smiles of both the Joker and the Black Dahlia. Because this lip piercing is so unique, be sure to find a piercer with experience.

Up next in the double perforation lip piercings is Angel Bites. Angel bites are a pair of symmetrical piercings placed above the upper lip. With a puncture on each side of the mouth, this piercing combines both the Monroe and Madonna. Snake Bites are a reflection of Angel Bites, being placed symmetrically below the bottom lip. A labret stud can be worn in these piercings, but captive bead rings are the more popular choice.
